Rooi Catootje estate

Plantation Rooi Catootje
Plantation Rust en Vree (Peace and Tranquillity) was founded in the first decades of the 18th century and had 30 acres of land. In the 19th century the plantation was renamed Rooi Catootje after a ‘rooi’ (Dutch for rainwater drainage channel) that runs along the eastern border of the plantation. It remains unknown why the plantation was renamed and why the channel was called Catootje, a Dutch girl’s name.
Rooi Catootje estate
The estate consists of a few historical buildings. The former plantation house, houses the Mongui Maduro historic house museum. The kunukuhouse and bathhouse will be restored and open for the public the end of 2024.

Garden & Hofi

Garden
The garden surrounding the properties are home to different spices of wildlife, plants and trees. The paths are an integral part of the overall design, curving rather than straight, following the contours of the land, passing around trees, and drawing walkers into the garden. Explore the garden on foot and enjoy the serenity. The mission of Ena Dankmeijer was to preserve the nature and to educate the next generation on the environment.
Hofi of Rooi Catootje
A large green area named hofi, with its own dam system, was used in the past to store water during the rainy seasons. After being 20 years out of order, we have started to restore the 3 dams and to open the hofi back up for visitors. Kasper Lendering: "In 2024, several local organizations, including AWA-Consult, are joining forces in a project called 'Awa pa Kòrsou', which aims to restore historic waterworks in Curaçao. This initiative, supported by subsidies from the Dutch government and the Stichting Monumentfonds Curaçao, focuses on tackling climate-related challenges such as droughts, heat stress and flooding. Through the restoration of waterworks in areas such as Savonet, Zevenbergen and Rooi Catootje, the project aims to reduce the impacts of climate change on the island." Kasper is tasked with the coordination of the restoration of the historic waterworks in the area of Rooi Catootje in Curaçao.
